    As a Reading Tutor, your crucial role will impact the lives of many children, offering vital assistance to those who need extra help reading at their grade-level. Immerse yourself in a local school, supporting kindergarten through third-grade students with one-on-one or paired guidance to enrich their reading skills. Your commitment during school hours for the entire academic year ensures a profound impact.
    With training and on-site coaching, you'll be equipped to help children thrive. Join our AmeriCorps team on a mission to empower children through reading for lifelong success! We're actively seeking tutors for the 2024-25 school year. Unleash your passion – become a reading tutor and be the difference!
    How You’ll Take Action
    • Be a caring adult that provides support to help students build their skills and confidence
    • Track student progress and regularly meet with the school’s on-site coach
    • Conduct skill assessments and enter student scores into data software.
    • Commit to your own growth as a tutor through coaching, training, and professional development.
    • Represent Reading Corps at school events and share your experience with the community to raise awareness.

    It Starts with a Passion
    Reading Corps takes everyday people and trains them to be great tutors. Anyone can become a tutor as long as they have a passion to make a difference – and meet the following minimum qualifications.
    • Dependable and have a history of good attendance
    • Able to understand and follow instructions
    • Open to making improvements based on feedback
    • Capable of setting a pace and maintaining a schedule with students
    • Competent with basic computer skills (like email and navigating online)
    • Fluent in English for speaking, reading, and writing
    • 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent
    • A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States*
    • Able to successfully complete a background check
    • Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve in our programs at this time. DACA applicants may be eligible for Americorps VISTA programs, for more information click here.

    Compensation & Perks Package

    While you’re making a difference, you’ll receive a paycheck (stipend) every two weeks and additional perks! As an AmeriCorps program we have both federally provided benefits and program specific benefits.
    Federal Benefits include:
    • Up to $5176.50 in Education Award
      • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award* which can be used to pay tuition or repay qualified student loans. Individuals 55 at the start of their service term may gift their award to a family member. Click Here for more information.
    • Federal student loan forbearance and interest repayment.
    • Time accrual toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
    Program Specific Benefits by hours commitment per week
    35 Hours
    • $1000 stipend paid every two weeks.
    • Individual health insurance — monthly premium 100% covered.
    • Child care assistance — based on family size and income.
    25 Hours
    • $750 stipend paid every two weeks.
    18 Hours
    • $535 stipend paid every two weeks.
    10 Hours
    • $350 stipend paid every two weeks.
